For property coverage, consider what’s at risk: building, contents and net income. You should also consider the types of loss that may occur, such as fire, wind and water damage. Be sure to ask your insurance professional to review potential losses and offer the best coverage to protect you if disaster strikes. Finally, be aware of the financial consequences of a loss. Some things are easy to calculate, such as inventory. Other losses are more difficult, such as lost income if you have to shut down your business for three months following a hurricane.
Your best line of defense against loss is to be aware of the type of loss or damage that can occur. For example, if your home or business is in a coastal community, you are at a greater risk for loss due to hurricane force winds and rainwater that might enter your business after roof damage. Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, with the greatest risk of storms in September. You can stay informed by signing up for weather alerts from ready.gov/alerts, the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radio. These sites are also great resources to help ensure you’re prepared well in advance of any storm.
